Every five years, people in the region are called upon to elect their "regional parliament": the regional assembly. The body consists of at least 80 people who are elected by the almost 2 million eligible voters from the city of Stuttgart, the districts of Böblingen, Esslingen, Göppingen, Ludwigsburg and the Rems-Murr district.
Voting is by proportional representation with list proposals: The voters decide on a list. The current regional assembly, now in its seventh year, has 92 members. The number of members can vary after each election. This is due to up to 16 compensatory seats. These ensure that the ratio of seats corresponds to both the result of the election in the individual constituencies and the ratio of the total number of votes achieved in the Stuttgart region. The number of seats in each constituency is also weighted according to the number of inhabitants in the districts. This results in the following distribution of the 92 seats in the current committee: City of Stuttgart 20 seats, Böblingen district 11 seats, Esslingen district 19 seats, Göppingen district 8 seats, Ludwigsburg district 21 seats, Rems-Murr district 13 seats.
