When balancing the land area, a distinction is made between different uses. These include settlement and transportation area, forest area, agricultural area, water area and all other types of use.

The Stuttgart Region has a comparatively high proportion of settlement and transportation areas of just over 23 %, while in Baden-Württemberg as a whole it is only 15 %. In an international comparison with other metropolitan regions, the region nevertheless has a high proportion of forest and agricultural land. They make up 30 % and 45 % of the region's area respectively.
