Population survey

Together with Forschungsgruppe Wahlen Telefonfeld GmbH (FGW), the Verband Region Stuttgart conducted a third telephone survey in March 2023 after 2013 and 2018, in which 1,415 people took part.

Location

The Stuttgart Region is located in the center of Baden-Württemberg and extends over 3,654 square kilometers full of diversity: sometimes along the Neckar, sometimes along the Swabian Alb, sometimes full of green nature, sometimes urban, sometimes agricultural.

Population and area

On 30.09.2022, 2.8 million people lived in the Stuttgart region, which corresponds to around 25% of the population of Baden-Württemberg. At 19.7%, the proportion of foreigners was well above the state average of 16.4%. Demographic change is also having a lasting impact on the age structure in the Stuttgart Region. There are more and more older people, while the number of younger people is decreasing.

Area structure

When balancing the land area, a distinction is made between different uses. These include settlement and traffic areas, forest areas, agricultural areas, water areas and all other types of use.

Population distribution

The distribution of inhabitants in the Stuttgart region shows that a ring of large district towns has formed around the city of Stuttgart. This ring reflects the polycentric structure of the region.

Employment

There are currently 1.28 million employees subject to social insurance contributions registered in the Stuttgart region. Of these, 0.3% work in the primary sector (agriculture, forestry and fishing), just under 33% in the secondary sector (manufacturing industry) and around 67% in the tertiary sector (services).

Labor market

In addition to the state capital Stuttgart, the regional employment hubs are generally the medium-sized centers of the Stuttgart region. This leads to high commuter flows to and from these cities.

Economic strength

An important indicator for the economic power of the Stuttgart Region is the gross domestic product (GDP), which records the value of all goods and services produced or rendered in the area under consideration. The Stuttgart Region's GDP amounts to 146 billion euros.
