Delivery logistics
How can delivery processes and commercial transport be bundled and optimized in order to secure the supply of goods to city centres and in the countryside, while at the same time relieving the associated traffic volume? What contribution can the region and local authorities make to establishing innovative and sustainable forms of supplying goods to companies, retailers and private customers, thereby strengthening city centers, for example?
Up to now, sustainable, future-oriented mobility has usually only considered forms of personal mobility such as public transport, bicycles or motor vehicles. Yet commercial traffic accounts for more than a third of all traffic movements and is of existential importance, especially in a strong economic region.
The region has resolved to pay more attention to commercial traffic and to establish appropriate support options.
Concrete proposals for this include, for example
- securing and strengthening rail freight transport in the region
- supporting projects such as packing stations and delivery facilities
- delivery zones, city / micro hubs as interfaces for electric or consolidated deliveries
- Strategies for inner-city deliveries
To this end, the region has established a regional logistics working group, which meets several times a year at the invitation of Verband Region Stuttgart (VRS) and Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH (WRS). Representatives of the municipalities meet with experts on the topic of delivery logistics and the joint development of implementation-oriented projects.
Co-financing
Through the program for co-financing regional model projects and cooperation in the area of economic and tourism promotion, the region provides impetus and financial support to municipalities in the development of model projects. One of the eligible topics is explicitly the implementation of commercial transport and logistics projects.
A further component will be launched in 2024. Back in 2016, the Verband Region Stuttgart carried out a comprehensive study of the interfaces between rail and water transport. This examined the potential of all existing industrial tracks, routes, ports and lands. Together with the state capital Stuttgart and the districts of the region, the Verband Region Stuttgart is planning to activate the potential of rail freight transport in the region as part of a joint project, including in the form of specific implementation projects.
