For the Verband Region Stuttgart, Park and Ride (P+R) is an important component in connecting mobility. P+R gives users access to public transport who would otherwise not have an adequate connection to sustainable means of transport and extends the catchment area of a stop to areas beyond the respective local municipality.
In addition, P+R is a means of attracting new customers to public transport: people who previously did not use public transport or hardly used it at all often start by driving to the station and taking the train from there. The next step is to take the bus to the station.
There are currently around 18,400 car parking spaces at 115 rail stops in the Stuttgart region. To make it easy to get to the station by car, the Verband Region Stuttgart aims to keep the P+R facilities as free of charge as possible. The region therefore makes a financial contribution to existing P+R parking spaces and promotes the construction of additional facilities.
Specifically, it grants an annual revenue guarantee of EUR 180 per parking space for existing parking spaces and, in addition to the state funding, provides a construction grant of up to EUR 4,500 for additional P+R parking spaces.
