Clever change: Bike+Ride
Especially since the widespread use of e-bikes, two-wheelers, whether with or without an auxiliary motor, are playing an increasingly important role in mobility in the region. This is also reflected in the Bike and Ride (B+R) facilities. Between 2015 and 2019, the number of bicycle parking spaces on offer grew by 9 percent to around 13,000. Good B+R facilities at train stations make using public transport more attractive and thus increase the number of passengers on the S-Bahn. Because more and more high-quality bicycles are being ridden, secure facilities are in demand among users. A wide range of funding programs are already available to local authorities for the construction of B+R facilities, which is why the Verband Region Stuttgart has focused its funding program on the costs for users.
The main features of regional B+R funding are as follows:
- The municipalities receive a financial contribution of €50/year per parking space.
- The parking spaces are used to switch to public transport - a VVS or comparable subscription is required.
- Use is free of charge.
- The polygoCard can be used as a means of access.
- The bicycle parking facilities will be maintained for 10 years.
- The operating times of the facilities correspond to the operating times of the public transport service.
Regional B+R funding is already being implemented or is about to be implemented in a total of five municipalities:
- The mobility station at Esslingen Bahnhofsplatz contains a bicycle parking garage with a total of 370 bicycle parking spaces. Of these, 300 are funded by the Verband Region Stuttgart.
- In Plochingen, 65 parking spaces in the bicycle parking garage at the train station are part of the regional B+R funding.
- The town of Leonberg is participating with 50 parking spaces in its Leonberg train station bicycle parking garage.
- Leinfelden-Echterdingen wants to include its bicycle parking garage at Stadionstraße tram stop with 20 spaces in the regional B+R funding.
- The Radbox in Fellbach is an automatic bicycle parking garage with individual parking spaces. Of the total of 78 parking spaces, the city of Fellbach intends to make 39 available for regional B+R funding.
